Elizabeth Holmes in Prison: Life at FPC Bryan
Holmes reported to Federal Prison Camp Bryan on May 30, 2023. Courts had refused to let her stay free while she appealed. The camp sits about 100 miles northwest of Houston and houses women at the lowest security level in the federal system. There are no high walls or cell blocks of the kind people picture. Inmates live in dormitory-style housing and hold prison jobs.
Her appeal did not succeed. In 2024, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld her conviction and her sentence.
How Long Is Elizabeth Holmes’s Prison Sentence?
Judge Edward Davila originally sentenced her to 135 months, which is 11 years and 3 months. In March 2026, the same judge reduced the term by one year, to 10 years and 3 months. The cut came under a retroactive change to federal sentencing guidelines that applies to some first-time offenders.
Judge Davila was careful to say the reduction did not shrink the crime. In his order, he wrote that “the hundreds of millions of dollars in losses caused by Holmes’s fraud speak for themselves.”
Credits she has earned under the First Step Act also count toward her release. Federal records list her projected release date as February 22, 2030. Reports in September 2026 said she is due to move to the Austin Transitional Center, a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas, on August 23, 2027. After release she will live in Austin under federal supervision, ABC News reported.
Elizabeth Holmes’s Net Worth: From $4.5 Billion to Zero
In 2014 and 2015, Forbes estimated Holmes’s fortune at about $4.5 billion, based almost entirely on her stake in Theranos. That number was only ever on paper. Once the company’s technology was exposed, Forbes revised her net worth to zero in 2016.
Today, there is no reliable public figure for what she owns. What is public is what she owes. The court ordered Holmes and Balwani to pay $452 million in restitution to victims, jointly.
Elizabeth Holmes Nowadays: Family and Public Image
Holmes has two young children with her partner, Billy Evans, both born around the time of her trial and sentencing. She gave a long interview to The New York Times shortly before she reported to prison. She spoke mostly about her family and her regrets. She has also asked for her sentence to be commuted, according to The New York Times.
She also let filmmakers in. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim followed Holmes, Evans and their children in the weeks before she went to prison. The result, the documentary You Can See Everything, premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2026, the BBC reported.
Her former partner at Theranos, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, was convicted on all 12 counts in his own trial. He is serving a separate federal sentence of nearly 13 years.
Why the Holmes Story Still Matters
Holmes is one of the few Silicon Valley founders ever to go to prison for misleading investors. That is why her case still matters. It drew a line between startup optimism, which is legal, and lying to raise money, which a jury found she did. Read our full Theranos file for the story of how the company was built and how it fell.
When Forbes Wrote Her Fortune Down to Zero
Her paper fortune was gone long before her trial. In June 2016, Forbes lowered its estimate of her net worth from $4.5 billion to nothing. Its figure had been based entirely on her roughly 50% stake in Theranos. Forbes said about $800 million was a more realistic value for the company than $9 billion. Because investors held preferred shares that are paid first, Holmes’s stake was “essentially worth nothing,” CNBC reported.
The restitution order came later and made things worse. Holmes and Balwani were ordered to pay $452 million to 12 victims, NBC News reported. Prosecutors told the court in 2026 that she had paid only a minimal amount so far.
There are other penalties on her record too. In her 2018 settlement with the SEC, Holmes agreed to pay a $500,000 penalty and accepted a 10-year ban from serving as an officer or director of a public company, the SEC said. She also gave up majority voting control of Theranos and returned millions of shares.
What Her Victims Say
Some of the investors she defrauded are still watching. Alan Eisenman, an early Theranos investor who testified at her trial, learned of the halfway house move through the Justice Department’s victim notification system. He told NBC News he hoped Holmes would serve her time through her February 2030 release date. He is also against any form of presidential clemency, NBC reported. The Justice Department is required by law to notify crime victims of developments like this one. The update said Holmes had been approved for placement in a community corrections center, ABC News reported.
What Holmes Is Saying From Prison
She still says she is innocent. In a post on X in late September 2026, Holmes wrote that she had been imprisoned for “1,216 endless days and nights” and that she was fighting to prove her innocence and get home to her partner Billy Evans and their two children, ABC7 reported. She said posts signed with her initials, EAH, are her own words, and that family members help run the account.
Her victims hear it differently. Eisenman says Holmes owes him and his wife almost $150,000 of the $452 million in restitution, and he has “not received a penny,” he told NBC News. “She was a liar back in 2006,” he said, “and she’s a liar today.”
What Happened to Sunny Balwani
Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, Holmes’s former partner and Theranos’s former president, was tried separately in early 2022. Each trial lasted nearly four months, the Ninth Circuit noted. A jury convicted him on all 12 counts. He faced the same guideline range as Holmes, 135 to 168 months, according to the appeals court, and he is serving nearly 13 years. The Ninth Circuit upheld his conviction on the same day as hers, February 24, 2025.
Elizabeth Holmes on Screen
Her story has been retold many times. Alex Gibney’s documentary The Inventor, the podcast The Dropout and the TV series of the same name all covered it. The series won Amanda Seyfried an Emmy for playing Holmes, the BBC noted.
The newest film is You Can See Everything, by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, which premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2026. The filmmakers followed Holmes, her partner Billy Evans and their two children in the weeks before she reported to prison. The BBC described her as “as famous and defiant as ever.”
Can Elizabeth Holmes Get Out Early?
Probably not much earlier than 2030. Her projected release date is February 22, 2030, after a sentence cut and First Step Act credits. Her move to a halfway house in August 2027 is a normal step near the end of a federal sentence. It is not a release. A clemency request is her only real shortcut.
Halfway house stays usually last three to six months, Forbes reported. The Austin Transitional Center is a 460-bed facility for men and women owned by CoreCivic, a private prison company. Residents can leave for work and job searches. Holmes has also asked for her sentence to be commuted; no decision had been reported as of October 2026.
Where Is Elizabeth Holmes Now Headed? The Halfway House Move
If you ask where is Elizabeth Holmes now, the answer changes in August 2027. She is due to leave the prison camp for the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas. Victim Alan Eisenman learned the date from the Justice Department’s victim notification system, NBC News reported. A Justice Department source told People the move has nothing to do with a commutation; she simply became eligible.
Life there is looser, but she will still be serving her sentence. Here is what changes for her, based on Bureau of Prisons rules and what a prison consultant told NBC News.
| At the halfway house | What it means |
|---|---|
| Status | Still a federal inmate, under Bureau of Prisons supervision |
| Work | Expected to work about 40 hours a week, usually within 15 days of arriving |
| Contact | Can have a phone and earn weekend passes home |
| Oversight | Sign-outs, head counts and continuous monitoring |
| Costs | Part of her pay goes toward the cost of her stay |
| Services | Counseling and job placement to rebuild community ties |
After her release, set for February 22, 2030, she is expected to live in Austin under the U.S. Probation Office, Axios reported.
Why Prosecutors Opposed Cutting Her Sentence
The government fought the 2026 reduction. In a court filing, prosecutors argued that Holmes had not accepted responsibility, had paid minimal restitution and “has the opportunity to reoffend,” NBC News reported. They also told the court she had said she intends to return to healthcare technology after release.
Prosecutors added that she had been advising her partner, Billy Evans, on fundraising for his startup, a company they said has similarities to Theranos. The judge still cut her term from 135 to 123 months. The judge agreed with Holmes that she had not personally caused “substantial financial hardship” to her victims, according to NBC.
Her Appeals Are Almost Used Up
On February 24, 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed her conviction, her 135-month sentence and the $452 million restitution order. In May 2025, the court denied her request for a rehearing. That left a Supreme Court petition as her last route through the courts.
